During this portion of project, an online book will be produced by the class. A lot of information has gathered about the "Manufacture of the Periodic Table", so decisions will have to be made as to what needs to be included in this children's book. The writing of this book needs to be at a fifth grade level. It will written with the goal that the book can be used as a reference for a report about the periodic table, the history of its development, and information about a selected group of elements (ones that are the principle elements which make up the Earth and its atmosphere would required, along with others that would be of interest to students of that age). Additional research may be needed to adequately write these portions of the book. Vocabulary used in the writing must be at a level that these students can grasp. The written portions are to be saved groups disks which will be given to you for this purpose. Presentation of what was written will done during class by each group.
Once the writing is completed, each student is to evaluate all sections of the book and make appropriate suggestions for improvement, using each group's disk. Although the disks will be reviewed as a group, this evaluation is to be completed and handed in individually by the deadline specified in class. The "web book" will be written after the final draft has been approved by the class.
GROUPS FOR BOOK SECTIONS:
HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT: Be sure to include each of the four scientists who were studied during the project, along with other individuals who contributed significant modifications to the periodic table. Be prepared to present this to the class, with justification for what information was included and why it was included.
STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION: Include information related to rows and columns of the periodic table. Be prepared to present this to the class, with justification for what information was included and why it was included.
ELEMENT INFORMATION: Elements included must be those which are found in the highest abundance on Earth and its atmosphere. Other elements which students of this age would be most familiar should be included. Characteristics included should be properties that students of this age would know about, along how each of these elements are classified. Deductions will be made for properties included which fifth graders would not know.
